At all times of the day, the sound of live music engulfs the air while walking up and down the streets of Broadway and 2nd Avenue in downtown Nashville. Honky tonk after honky tonk provides patrons with some of the best talent Music City has to offer seven days a week. The singers and musicians who play throughout the day and night while paying their dues waiting on their big break are the true unsung heroes of the music scene in Nashville.

These aspiring stars come from all over the world with dreams in their eyes hoping to be discovered and one day go from playing Tootsies or Nudie’s to Bridgestone or The Ryman. One of those stars-to-be is Lindsay Bowman. I met up with Bowman recently to discuss her journey since moving to Nashville and her debut single “You Don’t Get To Know.” The Virginia native got her start at an early age, making her stage debut at her grandmother’s church at the ripe old age of four. “I’m pretty sure I was singing coming out of the womb,” Bowman says.

Family is very important to Lindsay, as she grew up singing alongside her mother, even going as far as recording a gospel album with her. “That’s a super special memory that we have,” Bowman says. “I always love singing with my mom whenever I can.”

Before making the jump to Nashville, Lindsay sang anywhere that would give her a microphone, including church, school, festivals, and even as a member of the band “Backstreet.” Bowman also competed in numerous competitions, and was crowned “Miss Danville-Pittsylvania County” in 2009, which led to her being able to sing on live statewide television while competing in the Miss Virginia pageant.

In the fall of 2011, she knew it was time to make the leap and pack everything up and move to Tennessee. Shortly after moving to Nashville, Lindsay met another aspiring female singer and formed the popular Nashville duo Smoke ’n Guns. The duo played up and down lower Broadway for seven years while releasing two EPs. They also traveled throughout the U.S. playing, and also had the opportunity to open for some of country music’s legendary artists like The Oak Ridge Boys, Diamond Rio, and Mark Wills.

In the fall of 2018, Smoke ’n Guns went their separate ways in attempt to find who they are as solo artists. Since then, Lindsay has been hard at work working on her current project and the reward of that hard work is her debut single “You Don’t Get To Know.” She wrote the song with fellow singer-songwriter Liz Anne Hall. “It is unfortunately based on a true story about a break up,” Bowman says when describing the song, “it’s one of those relatable songs where you go through a break-up and the person is still trying to reach out wanting to know what’s going on in your life.”

The female empowering song was produced by Grammy-nominated and longtime Dolly Parton collaborator Kent Wells. “He worked with Dolly for years, so I knew I was in good hands,” Bowman says of the experience. Wells introduced her to other great writers including Keith Burns of Trick Pony and Pete Sallis, who co-wrote “Shut Up and Fish” for Maddie & Tae.

Lindsay Bowman’s debut single is the perfect “anti-Valentine’s Day” anthem for all of those celebrating Galentine’s Day with empowering lyrics such as, “I hope it burns you up that I’m just fine on my own.” “You Don’t Get To Know” can be found on all major streaming services, including iTunes and Spotify and will be followed with a music video soon.
